The Surpassing Value of Knowing Christ–Philippians 3:1–11

But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ.
What is more, I consider everything a loss
because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord,
for whose sake I have lost all things.
I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ...
Philippians 3:7–8

Tuesday morning devotions from Philippians 3:1–11 were led by Karen. She read the passage that contains Paul's ringing declaration of the value of knowing Christ above all possible human accomplishments and possessions.

Then, she spoke about her grandfather, Harold Walker, and the many accomplishments in every facet of his life: family, serving his country, career, and possessions. But like Paul, what mattered most to him was and the eternal value of knowing Christ and of passing that faith onto the family gathered at Shadow Valley.

Tears flowed as memories of Harold flooded the thoughts of those who love him. Hearts ached for the loss of him. But the peace of God that passes understanding settled upon Harold's family, for they know Harold not only knows Christ, but also has experienced the eternal value Paul proclaimed in Philippians 3:10–11: the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.

We rejoice in Harold Walker's resurrection
as we grieve his death.
Those gathered on the mountain look forward to seeing you in heaven one day,
and we wouldn't be surprised if heaven looks a lot like...
Shadow Valley.
